About us

Each year, we bring a number of children from Belarus to stay in West Yorkshire for a number of  weeks with a group of host families.  Generally, the children will stay with the same family for up to 2 weeks.

In the Belarus summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it is important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. Doctors in Belarus say that this boosts the children’s immune systems for at least two years, helping them to resist, or recover from, serious illness.

It can also significantly reduce the amount of radioactive caesium which has built up in a child’s body.

Each summer Chernobyl Children’s Project (UK) brings around 400 children to Britain for a recuperative holiday.

Children come from some of the most contaminated parts of the country. There are still many children living in tiny rural villages, sometimes just a few miles from the Chernobyl plant. These children may not be ill yet, but their future is bleak if they continue to live in such a radioactive environment.

A happy, healthy holiday in the summer may give them a better chance.

In the past we have taken the children on lots of fun outings during their stay. Many of these have been donated by local businesses and volunteers who give their time for free. This typically includes a trip to the seaside, an outing on a narrow boat and visits to some of our wonderful historical sites. Or just a trip to the local park.
